Assam University

Assam University was established in the year 1994 after the enactment of Assam (Central) University Act 1989. The main campus of the University is spread in an area of 600 acres (2.4 km2), at Durgakona, near Irongmara which is about 20 km from Silchar, while the University also has a second campus at Diphu, in the East Karbi Anglong district of Assam. Built amidst typical landscape and sprawling hillocks, the campus of Assam University provides an ideal environment for the researchers, students and the people interested in academic excellence. The university has the territorial jurisdiction over the five districts of Assam viz., Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dima Hasao (erstwhile North Cachar Hills) and Karbi Anglong. The establishment of Assam University goes back to the history of people's struggle in Barak Valley. The "Saheed Minar" that is situated near the entrance of the university commemorates the history of Bengali language movement of this valley. The university has a total of sixteen schools which offer Social Sciences, Humanities, Languages, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Information Sciences, Technology and Management Studies. There are 42 departments running under these sixteen schools. The five districts under the jurisdiction of Assam University have 56 undergraduate colleges. Assam University is an institutional signatory to the Global Universities Network for Innovation (GUNI), Barcelona and United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) for its commitment to educational social responsibilities. Admission Process in Assam University Depending upon the course that they have applied, candidates are either selected through entrance tests conducted by the respective departments or on the basis of merit obtained by the candidates in their last qualifying exam. However, for admission to Engineering courses, candidates are selected through JEE (Main) and CEE (Assam). For PG courses in Engineering, one has to get a good GATE score.
